This
documentary film offers insight into the unique challenges faced by
international spouses who leave their previous lives (careers, studies, family
& friends) to start anew in an unfamiliar environment.
It profiles
the lives of 4 women who accompanied their husbands to the United States, where
they were doing graduate study or research at Stanford University.
Created by a
Belgian filmmaker (herself a spouse), it features the experiences and perspectives
of women from 4 countries, interspersed with comments by an advisor and a
marriage and family therapist.
Among the issues discussed are the interruption of oneÕs career, raising
children overseas, adjusting to a new culture and creating a new identity in
the new setting. The film enables spouses to realize that others share their
experience, and to put their situation into a broader perspective.
The
48-minute video is suitable for showing to international spouses, i couples and
families, and to campus administrators and community volunteers who interact
with international graduate students, visiting scholars, post-docs and visiting
researchers. It can also be useful as a springboard for discussion in ESL
classes attended by spouses and partners from abroad.
Copies of the DVD are available at $10 each, including mailing.
